Following his surgical residency at UCLA (University of California at Los Angeles), Dr. Gary worked for five years as a Senior Registrar in the British National Health Service in the North Wales' Oral and Maxillofacial Surgical Unit. In 1986, Dr. Gary joined Mercy Ships (MS) for the first MS surgical program. The location was Lazaro Cardenas, Mexico. Since that time, he has served full time in MS. In 1995, he added the responsibility of ships' Chief Medical Officer to his surgical role and continues to serve in both capacities to this day. From 1998 to 2003 Dr. Gary also served as Chief Executive Officer of the Mercy Ship, M/V Anastasis, in addition to his surgical and CMO responsibilities. Dr. Gary has worked with Mercy Ships in the nations of Benin, The Dominican Republic, The Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Ivory Coast, Jamaica, Liberia, Madagascar, Mexico, Senegal, Sierra Leone, South Africa, and Togo. Surgically he treats children and adults suffering with congenital deformities in the head and neck region such as cleft lip and/or palate; excision of tumors; reconstruction after destructive infections such as Noma; repair of burn damage and other similar problems in the facial, head and neck region. Dr. Gary met his wife, Susan, aboard the Anastasis in 1987 and together with their two children, Carys and Wesley, they reside full time on board the Africa Mercy.
