Beschreibung
Pellegrino Tibaldi 1545. This Lombard painter and architect, but of Bolognese training, arrives in Rome perhaps as early as 1543 distinguishing himself alongside Daniele da Volterra at the Orsini Chapel in Trinità dei Monti and, at the same time, enters the circle of collaborators of Perin del Vaga active in the decoration of the Sala Regia in the Vatican and Castel Sant'Angelo. If from Daniele Pellegrino he will borrow a strongly plastic style clearly attributable to the influence of Michelangelo, Perino marries refined intellectualism and, even before his death, conquers a leading role among the executors of his cartoons in the Castel Sant 'construction site. Angelo, in particular in the Sala Paolina and in the Sala di Apollo, for which drawings directly by his hand are known, testifying to an important margin of autonomy with respect to the foreman. The archangel Michael, protector of the place, is depicted here with a rich mantle and a short lorica moved by the wind; the mighty figure is in strong torsion and seems to rush forward with impetus as he sheaths his sword, thus alluding to the moment of the medieval legend that binds the Castle to the angelic apparition on its summit and to the consequent end of the plague.
