The village of Basgo is situated in the Indus Valley, short way north of the river, at the foot of the Ladakh Range of mountains, about 40km west of Leh, the capital of Ladakh. The fortress monastery of Basgo, towering high above the village, was built during 16th and 17th century. It is particularly known for its three statues dedicated to the Buddha Maitreya (the Future Buddha), located in three temples in the complex. The highest of the them is 14m high. In recent years the complex undergone renovation supported by the World Monuments Found contributed by the local villagers. A late summer view from the road leading between Leh and Kargil Srinagar.
