Beschreibung
The commission of the canvas – the only one signed and dated by the artist – may be connected with the famous wedding of Ferdinando I de Medici and Christine of Lorraine, which took place in Florence in1589. Considering the artist’s solid relationship with the Medici family and his fame as a painter of mythological subjects, the choice of Zucchi supports this conjecture. The painting portrays the crucial moment of the tale of Amor and Psyche when the maiden looks at her sleeping lover, who is soon struck by the drop of boiling oil that falls from her elegant lamp. Zucchi is known for the precision and elegance of his details, including flowers, jewels, and fabrics, which were often executed in collaboration with his brother, Francesco.
