Beschreibung

So wurden u. a. Frank Gericke Eisenhüttenstadt is a monument to urban building of distinction and the only city in Germany, which, as an industrial urban creation after the Second World War, features a self-contained urban structure that is separate of existing settlements and that paralleled the development of the evolving steel enterprise Eisenhüttenkombinat Ost (EKO, today ArcelorMittal Eisenhüttenstadt GmbH). This applies to the nucleus of the first four residential complexes, which illustrate the development of architecture and urban building in the 1950s and 1960s. In July 1950, the IIIrd Party Conference of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED) decided to build an ironworks combine for improving the metallurgic basis. As early as in the same month, the basic outline for the later development of city and works was determined. In August 1950, the government agreed on the location for the industrial site and, in November 1950, it determined the site for the new city. The foundation stone for the city was laid on 19 Feburary 1951; the architect Kurt W. Leucht, then head of the Institute for Urban Planning at the newly established Deutsche Bauakademie, was named general designer of the project. Both the works and the city were swiftly erected in the 1950s. When in September 1951 Furnace 1 was put into operation, the works already had 1,000 employees. At the same time, 7,100 people worked on the building sites of the ironworks combine. The city was developed simultaneously. At the end of 1955, the residential city, named Stalinstadt since 07 May 1953, already numbered more than 15,000 inhabitants. In 1961, it was renamed Eisenhüttenstadt and the neighbouring town of Fürstenberg (Oder) and the parish Schönfließ were incorporated as suburbs. With the completion of the first four residential complexes and the Magistrale (today‘s Lindenallee), the city was quintessentially completed according to the plans of Kurt W. Leucht. Originally planned for 30,000 inhabitants, it was to become an ideal city in Germany, where work and residential comfort combined with social quality of living to create a political and cultural commonwealth. However, in the course of the further development of the ironworks combine and other industries, the expansion of the city beyond its initially planned limits became necessary. In 1988, the population reached its climax with 53,200 inhabitants. Subsequently, the city and local economy successfully mastered the challenges newly imposed on them by the German reunification in 1990. Today, ArcelorMittal Eisenhüttenstadt GmbH (formerly EKO) is one of the most modern and important industrial enterprises in Brandenburg. New industrial settlements, such as one of Germany‘s largest paper mills (Progroup AG), strengthen Eisenhüttenstadt’s status as a location for business. In spite of this development, the population went into sharp decline (today about 29,000 inhabitants). This made necessary comprehensive urban redevelopment. Amongst other things, estates of prefabricated houses that had been created outside the originally planned city boundaries were demolished. The concentration on the urban building quality of the original planned city visibly contributes to the city‘s appeal.Today, the city centre is newly resplendent. Architectonic designed façades, contemporary works of art, art in the public sphere as well as generous green spaces characterise the overall structure of the protected area. Frank Gericke
