Auf einer Mauer unterhalb von einem der vielen Cafés direkt am Meeresufer prangt bis heute der Spruch in großen Buchstaben: Today is Life, Tomorrow never comes! Geschrieben wurde er vor Jahrzehnten von Giorgios Germanakis, dem Fischer, der zum Hippie wurde. Geradeaus und nach rechts geht es in die Bucht mit den legendären Sandsteinfelsen, in deren Wohnhöhlen junge Menschen aus aller Welt als Hippies ein Gegenmodell zur bürgerlichen Gesellschaft lebten: Fern der Zivilisation, nah der Natur. Mit Meditation, Musik und Drogen. Als erste zogen junge amerikanische Wehrdienstverweigerer ins Nichts von Matala, statt in den Vietnamkrieg.
In den 1960er Jahren siedelten sich in den neolithischen Wohnhöhlen Hippies aus aller Welt an und gründeten dort eine große Kommune. Zeitweise lebten hier auch Cat Stevens, Bob Dylan und Joni Mitchell.
On a wall below one of the many cafes right at the seashore emblazoned today of saying in large letters : Today is Life , Tomorrow never comes ! Straight ahead and to the right it goes into the bay with the legendary sandstone cliffs , in whose caves young people from around the world as a counter-model to hippies bourgeois society lived : Far from civilization , close to nature . With meditation , music and drugs . The first attracted young American conscientious objectors to nowhere of Matala , held in the Vietnam War .
